The Gipher is a digital GIF player created by Alessandro Scali & Marco Calabrese at Officina K, Turin, Italy with the  technical support of 2+ Consulting, Turin.

The objective of the Gipher is the same of its analog brother, the Giphoscope: in other words, the creation a digital device that allows artists to display and sell original art GIFs bypassing the web browser.

The Gipher is a very basic, essential, minimalistic digital GIF player; it has been conceived to display a single GIF in the easiest way possible: in fact, all you have to do is press a button and after few seconds the GIF is ready, and will run until you switch the Gipher off. And as written above, the most relevant thing is that the GIF is not running on a browser but is offline, on a micro SD card.

So, as Ian Epstein asked on a recent article on Artsy, 'what do you get when you buy a GIF?' Thanks to the Gipher you get an authentic, one-off digital artwork. No internet, no browser, no jokes: we're talking about a physical device displaying real art, something you can pick up and hold.

Compared with similar devices, f.e. Electric Objects, the Gipher differs also for its size: our digital GIF player is smaller, 25 x 15 x 6 cm. and it has a sort of handcrafted aluminum frame with black velvet details that hides the hardware placed on the back of the 16:9 screen.
